Dr. James Kalani
Military historian and Oahu native with 18 years studying the Pacific theater. Has published on Pearl Harbor's pre-war intelligence failures and consults for the National Park Service. Grew up near the harbor and knows the residential perspectives that never make it into the standard tour.
The laminated-card tour at Pearl Harbor is about reverence without context. James gives you the context — the diplomatic failures, the intercepted signals that went unread, the human stories of the men who were there. He grew up near this harbor, which means he also knows what the neighborhood looked like before it was a monument. After the historical sites, he takes you to the Red Hill overlook — an administrative facility above the harbor that offers a view of the entire basin that almost no visitor ever sees.
What Your Day Looks Like
A sample itinerary
Morning (8am)
Meet James at the USS Arizona Memorial. He's pre-arranged priority access — no queue. His narration focuses on the 90 minutes before the attack: the radar operators who saw the incoming aircraft and were told it was a B-17 delivery, the junior officer who correctly decoded the final diplomatic message and couldn't reach his commanding officer. The stories the plaques don't tell.
Midday (10–12pm)
Walk the Battleship Missouri and USS Bowfin. James explains why the Missouri's surrender deck faces Japan. He knows which hatches and compartments are rarely shown and can access them with a guide permit. A retired Navy diver who serves as James's regular contact meets you at the Bowfin for an off-script look at the submarine's torpedo room.
Late afternoon (4–5:30pm)
The Red Hill lookout, timed for golden hour. It's an administrative facility above the harbor, requires advance coordination, and reveals Honolulu, the harbor, and the Koolau ridge in one view. Most visitors never know it exists. James has a contact; you arrive as the light turns the harbor gold.
