Kai Makoa
Former Pipeline competitor with 22 years on the North Shore. Born in Haleiwa, raised surfing Sunset Beach before it had a parking lot. Now runs private wave-reading sessions and local food tours as a way of keeping visitors honest about what this coast actually is.
The North Shore is the most photographed stretch of ocean in Hawaii and the least understood. What the photos miss: the 4am stillness before anyone arrives, the coffee-and-silence ritual of locals watching the swell read, the way a former Pipeline competitor talks about a wave like it's a living thing he's known for 20 years. That's what this day is. Kai has competed at the highest level and walked away to build something more personal — a way of sharing this coast that doesn't feel like a tour.
What Your Day Looks Like
A sample itinerary
Dawn (5:30am)
Meet Kai at Sunset Beach as the light turns pink. He brings Kona coffee in a thermos. You read the break together — the sets, the timing, the direction. He explains why the winter swell here is different from anywhere on earth: the fetch, the bathymetry, the way Haleiwa's reef slows the water just enough.
Morning (7–11am)
Into the shorebreak — bodyboard, swim fins, or just float. Kai spots every set before it arrives. Monk seals sometimes appear on the sand at Laniakea; he knows which ones winter there. A roadside stop nobody photographs: a mango stand run out of a garage by a family he's known since childhood.
Midday (12–2pm)
Matsumoto's Shave Ice — the original, the one that's been there since 1951, not the Instagram replica. Then a drive up through the pineapple fields on the H2 to a ridge overlook that appears on no map and no guidebook. The entire North Shore from above, including Waimea Bay, in afternoon gold.
