The Lahaina channel is where the whales come. From December to April, humpbacks return from Alaska to birth their calves in these warm, protected waters. Ailani has been watching them for 20 years. She knows the bubble-net feeding sites, the areas where mothers rest with newborns, and the precise positions on the channel where breach behavior is most likely in the late afternoon. The sunset is the backdrop. The whales are the event. And because it's private — just your group, no strangers — you can actually have a conversation about what you're seeing.

Captain Ailani Souza
Born in Lahaina, captaining the Maui channel since she was 22. Knows the whale migration routes better than anyone operating in these waters — has contributed behavioral data to the Pacific Whale Foundation for 11 years. Rebuilt her charter business after the 2023 Lahaina fire, deliberately keeping it private and small.
What Your Day Looks Like
Late afternoon (4pm)
Board the catamaran at Lahaina Harbor. Ailani and her first mate brief you on the vessel and the plan. A catered picnic from a Lahaina kitchen arrives aboard already chilled — local cheeses, fresh fish poke, macadamia hummus, Maui-grown produce. You're underway by 4:30pm as the trade winds build.
Whale channel (4:30–6:30pm)
Ailani positions based on what she's seen over the past 48 hours. She tracks behavior: where the competitive pods have been, where the mothers are resting. In season, surface activity — breach, spyhop, fluke — is near-certain within 90 minutes. She identifies individuals by fluke markings and explains what the behaviors mean. The hydrophone goes in if conditions allow: you hear them underwater.
Sunset return (6:30–7pm)
Back to Lahaina Harbor as the West Maui Mountains go amber and the ocean turns gold. Ailani anchors briefly offshore for the light — she knows the exact position. Cold drinks, the last of the picnic, and the drive back to your hotel with a whale encounter you'll remember for the rest of your life.
