Hanalei Bay is a two-mile crescent of white sand backed by the fluted ridges of the Hanalei Valley — a scene so perfect it looks composed. What Koa provides is the version of this bay that most visitors miss: the spot the locals actually use, timed to when the light catches the mountains in late afternoon, set up before you arrive. The food comes from the Hanalei kitchen he's worked with for five years — local fish caught that morning, produce from the Hanalei valley farms, island-made treats. You arrive to find it already laid out.

Koa Nakamura
Hanalei Bay resident and certified ocean safety officer. His family has lived on the north shore for three generations. Works with a small group of Hanalei kitchen suppliers to source picnics that use only produce and fish from the valley and bay. Knows every current, wind pattern, and cloud behavior on this bay.
What Your Day Looks Like
Late afternoon (3pm)
Meet Koa at the Hanalei Pier. He walks you to the spot — 15 minutes from the parking area, past the surfing section, around the point to a section of the bay that sees almost no foot traffic on weekdays. The picnic is set up when you arrive: wooden crate cooler, proper plates and linens (not plastic), fresh cut flowers from the Hanalei market.
Afternoon (3:30–5:30pm)
The bay as it should be experienced. Koa is present but not hovering — he answers questions about the ridge (the Nāmolokama ridgeline, one of the wettest in the world), points out the cloud formations that signal afternoon rain on the mountain, identifies the birds. The food: fresh poke from that morning's catch, Hanalei Valley rice with pickled mango, local cheeses and macadamia, a taro hummus he makes himself.
Sunset (5:30–7pm)
The Hanalei mountains go from green to gold to purple in the evening light. Koa knows when the last fishing boats come in and which ones to watch. Local craft beverages — coconut water from the farm up the road, a small-batch Kauai vodka if desired. The walk back to the parking area in the dark.
